Is it possible to make a Samsung camera like the iPhone 12 Pro Max?

Samsung camera

Why did you buy the phone? The answers will be very different. If 10 years ago the most important option was “to be in touch”, now significantly fewer people will vote for it. But such usage scenarios as watching videos, playing games, music, and, of course, the camera have improved. It is the camera that has become almost the main element of the smartphone and even at the presentation it is given more time than any other component of the device. The reasons for this love are clear — we got what used to be a separate large device in the form of a small addition to the smartphone. And the level of image quality has increased significantly. Even I sometimes take photos for reviews on a smartphone camera, and not on the editorial Canon EOS 1D Mark III. Now Samsung is again preparing something new and, of course, will surprise us, but Apple has done it before.

Samsung cameras on phones

Samsung camera often use the most modern technologies. The Galaxy S9 and S10 series had their primary dual aperture sensors, while the S20 and S21 Ultra offered new maximum zoom capabilities that other brands like Huawei and Xiaomi have been chasing. Now there is information according to which the future Galaxy smartphone may have a new stabilization technology that has not yet been seen in Android devices. This information can be easily believed, since such systems are already used in the iPhone, and their introduction into the Samsung camera seems very logical.

How does digital stabilization differ from optical stabilization?

There are two types of image stabilization – digital and optical. In the first case, the camera does not have a special mechanical element, and its components move only for focusing. The stabilization itself is done by cropping (cropping) the picture a little and moving around it so that the image does not jerk so much. In the second case, a special element is built into the camera, which moves part of the structure so that the shaking is compensated not after the picture has entered the matrix, but even before that. This will achieve the best image quality. Sometimes the Systems work together. In this case, only a small part of the shaking is digitally corrected, and the picture is not only stable, but also of high quality.

Most modern phones in the middle and high segment are equipped with an optical stabilization system. It moves the optical elements, which refract light in different ways, and it enters the matrix differently. This works well with shaking hands, but it’s still not the best way to stabilize. There are systems that are used in SLR and system cameras, providing much better alignment.

At the moment, among smartphones, this can only be found in the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Even in other models of the 12th family, including the usual “Pro”, this is not. And this is the best you can think of.

How to best stabilize your video

The essence of stabilization is to move the sensor itself, and not the optical elements around it. This is a more complex and expensive technology, but the stabilization it provides is unmatched.

The Galaxy Club says Samsung may be bringing touch stabilization to a future Galaxy device, but we can’t say exactly which model we’re talking about yet. At the same time, almost no one doubts that this will really happen.

Some time ago it was rumored that Samsung had started a partnership with the legendary Japanese brand Olympus. The news of the collaboration alone is worthless, but new details that hint at the emergence of an advanced stabilization system already in the Galaxy S22 or even the Galaxy Z Fold 3 are of interest.

Samsung and Olympus

Why Olympus? It’s that simple! It was this company that pioneered sensor shift technology in their DSLRs in the early 2010s. Since then, many manufacturers have tried similar technologies in their DSLR and system cameras, but this has not yet reached smartphones.

If Samsung camera look like this one, the company will even more firmly establish itself among the best manufacturers of cameras for smartphones. And at the same time, she will be able not only to use these modules herself, but also to sell them, pushing Sony even more. Let me remind you that these two companies produce sensors for the lion’s share of smartphones of all manufacturers. Especially if they belong to a more or less high segment.
